  • Bowen Therapy for People

Bowen Therapy is a remedial, hands-on therapy applied using gentle pressure.

There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used.

    Bowen Therapy

With Bowen, and indeed all complementary therapies, we work holistically treating the whole person, rather than a particular condition. Treatment of the body as a whole may also reduce knock-on effects that can build up as the body compensates for reduced function of an injured part. For example, limping from a sprained ankle may result in a habit of lopsided walking, which in turn may provide a potential cause of future back pain.

Bowen is gentle and can generally be used safely and effectively on men and women of all ages, from new-born babies to the elderly and infirm.

Treatment will be carried out through light clothing such as T-shirt and leggings or jogging pants.

Bowen therapy was developed by an Australian, Thomas Bowen in the 1950’s, and introduced in the UK in 1993.

  • Emmett Technique

Emmett Technique - The Chameleon Approach to the Body

The EMMETT Technique is a unique muscle release systems using light finger pressure.

Used to address pain and discomfort, Emmett can be considered first aid for muscles.

    Emmett Therapy

The Emmett Technique is a unique body therapy created by Ross Emmett. It is an internationally recognised technique with therapists in over 26 countries worldwide and is equally effective on both people and animals.

The EMMETT Technique is an amazingly effective, gentle, safe and non-invasive muscle release therapy. It is used to address pain and discomfort, improve body movement, restore a positive emotional state and improve the quality of life.

The EMMETT Technique is a unique form of body therapy that involves the application of light finger pressure at specific points to release the tensions in muscle and muscle groups. The result is often instantaneous physical change.

What to expect in a treatment

People can be treated seated, standing or lying down. The use of this therapy will be guided by the specific needs of the individual client, through assessment and observation.

Treatments are usually carried out fully clothed, although tight clothing may have to be loosened. Light, loose clothing is recommended. Sessions can last anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

Animals can be treated wherever they are comfortable. Sessions can last from 20 - 60 minutes.

    How does it work?

It is suggested that the EMMETT Technique may interact with the body as described in the science of Critical Point Analysis which identifies that…

“In any highly complex system there is a specific, critical point at which the smallest input will result in the greatest change.”

For example a light touch on a small cog can halt the largest engine.

The Emmett Technique is based on an understanding of the body's response to light specific touch.

It has been suggested that the body reacts in a similar way to the workings of a touch-screen. The EMMETT points are small sensors that allow access to the brain via the therapists touch. The brain evaluates this stimulus and initiates the response of the muscle group to re-adjust the tension. These points have the ability to reset the memory program and create effective muscle action through memory re-calibration. A

Based in Sidcup I am happy to travel anywhere in the Southeast of England. Depending on distance there may be a charge for travel.

    Equine Bowen Therapy

Equine Bowen Therapy is a gentle, subtle and relaxing hands-on therapy, which makes it particularly suitable for nervous or sensitive horses.

The body recognises and responds well to a light touch, you only have to watch your horse’s reactions to a fly to realise sensitivity of the skin. Bowen works just below the surface of the skin interacting with the fascia that wraps around your horse’s muscles. Your horse’s body has an innate biological self healing mechanism that is driven by the nervous system to heal and restore the body.

Equine Bowen seeks to boost the body’s own natural healing capabilities assisting it to adjust and balance itself. There is no ‘crack-crunch’ and we always treat the whole horse, this is because the area of pain is not always where the problem is and there can also be areas of referred pain.

Can Bowen Therapy help your horse or pony?

All horses and ponies can benefit from Equine Bowen Therapy, whether they are top competition horses that need to be able to perform to their optimum, all-rounder, happy hacker or retired.

You do not need to wait till your horse is showing some signs of soreness before they will benefit from a Bowen treatment.

Discomfort, soreness and pain in a horse is often misinterpreted as 'bad behaviour'. People have described their horses as naughty, stubborn, fresh etc, this can be it is just saying Help!

If you are having problems with your horse's attitude to work and willingness to go forward, or your horse's behaviour ridden or in the stable has changed. Try Bowen!

If you are having problems with your horse on turns and circles, canter lead or jumping. Try Bowen!

Like people, most horses carry areas of tension, stiffness or tightness which can create soreness. It often occurs from compensating around a specific problem. Horses can injure themselves in many ways – whether it’s from getting cast in the stable, pulling back when tied up, slipping on the road or from ill-fitting equipment such as saddles and rugs.

Horses can often withstand a tremendous amount of discomfort over a lengthy period until showing signs that all is not well. The chances are the horse may have been suffering several months prior to a problem being noticeable and recognised.

For this reason I recommend initially 2-3 sessions, this enables me to follow up on progress and reassess. In some cases this may be sufficient. Where the problem is of a long-standing nature further treatments or occasional maintenance treatments may be needed to provide the best result.

Bowen therapy also works well as a preventative – if everything in the body stays supple, the likelihood of pulling a ligament or straining a muscle when under stress lessens.

For competition horses working Bowen into their fitness schedule can help keep them in top condition.

Can Bowen Therapy help with your horse or pony's problem?

Equine Bowen has been reported to help with a wide range of conditions including:

    • Muscle Spasm
    • Muscle Atrophy or uneven development
    • Disunited Gait or Irregular Action
    • Unlevelness
    • Not tracking up, uneven stride
    • Cold or Sore Back
    • Sore Withers
    • Stiffness on one rein
    • Tightness in quarters and or shoulders
    • Deterioration in performance
    • Respiratory Problems
    • Sluggish Lymphatic or Immune System
    • Restricted lateral movement
    • Reluctance to give correct canter lead

    • Nervous/worried/anxious horses and ponies

    • Uncharacteristic change in temperament - Rearing, Bucking or Napping

What about the rider - can Bowen Therapy help you?

Horse and rider have a considerable effect on one another, the position of horses centre of balance changes when carrying a rider.

if you are compensating for pain or an injury then this can mean your weight and position in the saddle can be unbalanced or crooked. This often results in an unbalanced, crooked horse and vice versa. If your horse is unbalanced, crooked or compensating for a problem you will often find this will affect your position and balance.

Have you tried to sit balanced on a horse who is constantly throwing your weight to one side? Try Bowen for you and your horse!

Equine Bowen Therapy helps to relieve pain and tension in the horse, and Bowen encourages the rider to provide a more even, balanced weight on the horse’s back.

The benefits of Bowen for the rider include:

    • Improved position in the saddle
    • Improved balance and feel
    • Increased mobility
    • Improved recovery time after injury/fall

    Please note:

Bowen Therapy / Equine Bowen Therapy is a complementary therapy and not intended as a substitute for medical or veterinary advice or treatment. If in doubt please consult your doctor or veterinary surgeon.

Permission from your vet is required before treatment, this is the same for any form of treatment such as massage, physio/osteopathy.

    Emmett 4 Horses

The EMMETT Technique is a unique therapy involving the application of light pressure on specific points, referred to as Emmett Points. These can be in sequences that initiate gentle release in problem areas such as the neck, shoulder, lumbar and hindquarters.

Emmett is used to address pain and discomfort, improve body movement, restore a positive emotional state and improve the quality of life. Emmett can be thought of as first aid for muscles.

The pressure required to stimulate the EMMETT points does not need to be firm or painful. “No pain no gain” has no place in EMMETT Technique philosophy.

Ross Emmett developed and used his technique on animals long before he even considered trying them out on their two legged friends.

Can Bowen Therapy help with your horse or pony's problem?

Horses need freedom of movement and their muscles to be soft & supple to create peak performance – a tight restricted muscle can cause tendon tears and loss of performance when stressed.

The EMMETT Technique first evolved as a means for the founder, Ross Emmett to treat sick and distressed animals. Ross has always cared for animals and for their wellbeing. His experience in working as an animal attendant, Australian Dog Obedience Judge and a successful animal trainer have assisted his unique insight and the development of the EMMETT Technique. Ross discovered that the technique worked as effectively on the handlers as it did on their animals.

  • Kinesiology

I offer Kinesiology to identify and address any imbalances within the body and look at the elements that may be affecting your health – emotions, chemical challenges (including food sensitivities), structural or energetic stresses.

    Kinesiology

Kinesiology uses muscle testing to discover any imbalances in the body. It works by monitoring a person’s ability to hold a muscle against a light pressure.

Kinesiology combines Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with western medicine knowledge of anatomy. In TCM each muscle of the body relates to an organ, a meridian and an emotion. Testing muscle responses can accurately determine the balance of specific organs and body systems.

Kinesiology is a simple and safe method of analysis, which allows the client’s body to reveal to the practitioner what is needed to rectify the body’s problems. Kinesiology is a non-intrusive holistic complementary health therapy, which can work along side traditional medicine or can be effective if used on its own.

Kinesiology uses painless muscle testing to identify any imbalances within the body and look at the elements that may be affecting your health – emotions, chemical challenges (including food sensitivities), structural or energetic stresses. We look at the body as a whole, Kinesiology looks beyond the symptoms to find the root cause/s.

Once any imbalances are identified, a treatment plan may include Bowen Therapy, Flower Remedies, nutritional support, emotional stress release techniques, suggested lifestyle changes and more depending on the requirements of your body as determined by your body’s response to the muscle tests.

Kinesiology is beneficial for everyone and can help men and women of all ages, from new-born babies to the elderly.

    Can Kinesiology help you?

Kinesiology can help with a wide range of conditions, including:

    • Acid stomach, bloating
    • Allergies, hay fever, food sensitivities
    • Anxiety, depression, phobias
    • Arthritis or joint pain
    • Asthma
    • Catarrh, rhinitis, sinus problems

    • Dyslexia, dyspraxia
    • Insomnia
    • Low immune system
    • Migraine, headaches
    • Skin problems – eczema, psoriasis, acne
    • Stress
    • Tired all the time

    Many children are brought for Kinesiology with conditions such as;

    • Behavioural problems – ADHD, anger, anxieties
    • Digestive problems – constipation, flatulence
    • Food Sensitivities or Allergies
    • Learning difficulties
    • Parasites
    • Pet allergies

    • Skin conditions – eczema, rashes
Please remember that Kinesiology is a complementary therapy and is not intended as a substitute for medical advice or treatment. If in doubt please consult your doctor.

    Animal Kinesiology

Animal Kinesiology focuses on three key things:

    • Identifying and clearing the core issue behind the behaviour problem.
    • Using energy medicine to stimulate neural pathways to helping new learning, repair damage to organs, meridians and chakras from long-term stress caused by the issue.
    • Clear any emotional stress from you, the owner, that may be contributing.

What type of stress are you able to pick up on?

The stress driving the behaviour can be either physical, emotional, energetic or biochemical.

Physical issues may be a problem with a muscle or an organ. In Chinese medicine it is believed each muscle relates to an organ of the body and also specific emotions. For example, aggressive dogs may have a problem with their liver, as anger is believed the emotional symptom of an unbalanced liver. The liver relates to the rhomboid muscles across the top of the shoulders, therefore the animal may be holding tension in the front quarters. An issue with either of these things could be causing the aggression.

Emotional issues often stem from the experience of a traumatic event. Rescue dogs often come with very little history therefore kinesiology can remove the stress being held in past memories that are affecting present behaviour. Sometimes dogs also just need help overcoming their ‘stuff’.

Energetic stresses relate to meridians and chakras. These energies play a huge role in the dogs wellbeing and behaviour. Electromagnetic stress would also be included as an energetic stress.

Biochemical stress can often be related to nutrition, hormonal imbalances or toxins. We can check for food intolerance or nutrition deficiencies as contributing factors.

How can the owners emotions be contributing?

Often, as owners, we have some of our own ‘stuff’ going on. Anxious people can often pass this anxiety onto their dogs, especially if their dog has been attacked previously, or has shown reactivity. Owners can also become so frustrated with the dog’s behaviour it creates a level of stress that prevents the dog learning a new more positive behaviour.

In order to clear the issue for the dog, we have to remove the stress surrounding the issue for the owner.

Kinesiology is a complementary therapy and not intended as a replacement or substitute for medical or veterinary advice or treatment. Please consult your doctor or veterinary surgeon for health concerns.

Permission from your vet is required before treatment, this is the same for any form of treatment such as massage, physio/osteopathy.

  • Reiki - Tera-Mai & Seichem

Reiki is a very gentle energy that is believed to help the body release stress and tension by creating deep relaxation and thereby promoting healing and health.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “the wisdom of God or the Higher power” and Ki which means “Life force energy”.

    Reiki Master - Tera-Mai & Seichem

We are all a combination of matter and energy with energy fields running through the body. Sometimes, through stressful daily living, this energy can become blocked, damaged and unbalanced. Reiki is believed to aid in restoring a natural balance of calm and tranquillity into the body, mind and soul.

Reiki healing is a calming energy projected to nurture emotional, mental, spiritual and physical states and restore universal life force balance which may have been depleted through illness, lack of exercise, poor diet, fear, guilt, anxiety, depression, loss and bereavement that contributes to a lack of harmony between body and spirit.

Reiki is believed to aid in healing these imbalances in a gentle, empowering way. It is thought that when healing takes place, energy is channelled through the body to revitalise and invigorate, helping to clear negativity and sluggishness in the auras.

Reiki has been reported to help:
    • Foster inner peace and spiritual growth.
    • Provide relaxation, stress reduction and relief from emotional distress.
    • Promote recovery from certain physical ailments caused by surgery or long-term illness.

As a Reiki Master I can teach you or treat you with Reiki. if you feel that Reiki combined with relaxation and meditative techniques would be appropriate for you, then please contact me and I would be happy to discuss it.

Why I Trained in Bowen Therapy

I became a Bowen Therapist after receiving treatment for on-going issues following trouble with acute back pain. I was so impressed with the results I decided to train as a Bowen Technique Practitioner.

When I suffered an acute injury to my back in 2013, this prevented me from working, driving or tending my horses. I was surprised to be told that all my doctor could do was prescribe pain killers. If I had no improvement in 3 weeks then I could be referred for scans/treatment. I decided to arrange treatment myself.

A number of chiropractic treatments stabilised my back, but after 6 weeks I was still unable to walk even short distances such as from road into a shop without severe pains down my leg.

I was introduced to Bowen by coincidence after reading a post from a Equine Bowen therapist looking for case studies. At a similar time my horse Bella had been investigated by my vet and thermal imaging scans taken showing muscular imbalances through her pelvic region and spasms in her hamstrings.

Bella appeared to like Bowen and improved massively within 3 sessions, moving freely. I was more sceptical as Bowen is so gentle, and was surprised with the difference after the first session. In 2 sessions I could walk without pain.

A Bowen session encourages the body to release and realign in such a gentle way, some would wonder what the therapist was actually doing that could make such a difference. Trust me, for me it made a huge difference!

In 2017 I was introduced to Emmett by Tony Sherry, I have found the Emmett technique to be really effective and treatment has help me with my tight calf muscles and ankle issues that I have had since teenage years.

Since then I have qualified to treat people and horses and I am currently studying to treat dogs.
